Event description
Celebrating plena and Esquina el Watusi with Leró Martínez and Los Pleneros de Don Segundo.

About this Event

If you go to Calle Cerra in Santurce on a Thursday night, you will hear some of the best played panderos from one of the most consistent plena nights in Puerto Rico: "Noches de Plena en la Esquina el Watusi", organized by Leró Martínez and Boricua Soy.

Noches del Watusi will be a tribute to that musical corner and those pleneros that keep the tradition alive in one of the most productive times that Afro-Boricua music has seen in years.

Our Special Guest: Leró Martínez Roldán

Vega Baja, Puerto Rico-born Leró Martínez Roldán is arguably one of the most talented and multifaceted young bomba and plena musicians to come out of Puerto Rico in the last decade. The percussionist, singer and bandleader is no mere preserver of tradition. Rather, Martínez Roldán advances folkloric plena and bomba through original songwriting and inventive arrangements. His three recordings Sacao del Horno (2015), Boricua Soy (2016) and Neto (2018) have received critical praise for their invigorating rhythms, superlative songwriting and dynamic ensemble playing.

Plena is traditional Afro-Puerto Rican music born in the late part of the 19th century in the town of Ponce, located in the southern part of the island. This popular music genre has been used both as a way of celebration and as a tool to protest against the local and federal government for critical issues affecting one of the world’s oldest colonies.

Los Pleneros de Don Segundo

Named in honor of Don Segundo Ruiz Belvis, Los Pleneros de Don Segundo performed for the first time on September 2016 when SRBCC was invited to prepare a musical surprise for Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture’s 2016 Raíces Gala.

Since then, SRBCC has worked extensively to provide Chicago’s only traditional plena project with adequate rehearsal space, and multiple opportunities to perform in events that go from private functions to city festivals.

Members include lead singer-songwriter Chris Suarez, musical director Michael Rodriguez (güiro), percussionists José Natal (tumbador), Quincy Raggs (seguidor), and Jonathan Pacheco (requinto), as well as Roy McGrath on saxophone.
