2013 Nobel Peace Prize Forum

Featuring Nobel Peace Prize winners Tawakkol Karman and Muhammad Yunus

The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is a premier international event designed to inspire peacemaking, broadly defined. For 25 years the Forum has probed the deep questions of peace and conflict. It is not a “sit and listen” conference. In the physical presence of a Peace Prize winner, attendees hear firsthand of the Laureate’s work, struggles and triumphs, and they have opportunities to ask questions and interact with the Laureate in a dynamic setting.

Business Day
- Friday, March 8, 12:00 – 5:00 pm

Investigating the relationship of business to world stability.  Features keynote presentation by Nobel Laureate and microcredit pioneer Muhammad Yunus along with workshops and networking with leading business innovators and social entrepreneurs.

Health and Science Day- Saturday, March 9, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

A new feature exploring the relationship of these realms to peace and global security.  Featuring keynote by Partners in Health co-founder, Paul Farmer, MD, along with break-out sessions and workshops with thought leaders and scientists who are reshaping our world.

Global Day - Sunday, March 10, 10:00 – 5:30 pm

Examining wide topics that underpin or undermine world peace.  Featuring keynote by Nobel Laureate Tawakkol Karman, called “the mother of the Arab Spring,” along with workshops and performances.

Nobel Peace Prize Forum

Under the auspices of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, the Nobel Peace Prize Forum inspires peacemaking by focusing on the work of Nobel Peace Prize winners and leading international peacemakers and peacebuilders.

One key criteria set out by Alfred Nobel for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize is for the holding and promotion of  “Peace Congresses”. The Forum is shaped from this vision. For over 27 years, the Nobel Peace Prize Forum has been one of only three programs officially associated with the Norwegian Nobel Institute (the two others are the Nobel Peace Prize Center and the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo).

The Nobel Peace Prize Forum provides an important, highly visible international platform for advancing the work of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. By bringing together laureates, leaders in government, business, academia and civil society to think together and take action – the Forum advances dialogue around drivers of conflict, emerging threats to peace and security, and situations that may have fallen off the international radar.

The Forum focuses on five key areas critical to sustainable peacemaking and peace-building, with an aim to advance dialogue and action on:

1.     Disarmament

2.     Poverty Reduction and Food Security

3.     Environmental Sustainability

4.     Human Rights

5.     Global Health Systems

These core areas are also explored through a set of crosscutting issues including gender, inter-religious dialogue and education. The catalytic work of the Forum is continued throughout the year by the “PeaceitForward Campaign”.
