Event description
We invite you to compete in the Finger Lakes' only regional crossword event. All proceeds will support adult literacy in Tompkins County.

About this event

Tompkins Learning Partners (TLP) announces the cruciverbalist event of the season, the Ninth Annual Finger Lakes Crossword Competition.

This event is an important fundraiser for TLP, a LiteracyNY affiliated non-profit organization, which provides literacy tutoring, free of charge, for over 100 adults in our community.

Tompkins Learning Partners invites you to join your friends and neighbors and compete right here in your own backyard in the Finger Lakes’ only regional crossword event. 100% of all proceeds from the tournament will support adult literacy here in Tompkins County.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Update as of September 10, 2021: Due to the increasing COVID-19 infection rate, the break-throughs and the spreading Delta variant, rather than risk any of our friends and neighbors getting sick, we have decided to cancel the In-Person portion of this year's event and, just like last year's very successful competition, go All-Virtual.

There will be no In-Person option for the event.

"Once more unto the breach dear friends, once more!" (My apologies to Edward de Vere.) As you undoubtedly remember, in March of 2020, for some obscure reason that I choose to forget, we rescheduled the Eighth Annual FLCC and "Honor" Event for September 2020, which, like most of our lives, was held completely virtually.

For reasons explained above, we will again be holding our Ninth Annual FLCC and "Honor" Event only virtually.

Some introductory information:

Competition is open to individuals and teams (2-4 players). There will be three levels of competition: Easier, Trickier, and Toughest. All teams, regardless of number of players, will be competing against each other. (Huh, you say? Patience!) Three levels of unique puzzles will be created by our very own "Puzzlemaster," Adam G. Perl, maker of numerous crosswords published in the New York Times, and past owner of Pastimes Antiques in the Dewitt Mall.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three individuals and teams who complete a perfect puzzle in the shortest amount of time. Whether you are a casual, serious or advanced puzzler, you are invited to be part of the fun! See the rules and check out our previous winners.

If interested in Underwriting, becoming a Business Sponsor, a Donor, or if you have any questions at all about this event, email Event Chair Gary Weissbrot.

When you register, you can select your skill level, enter your team information (if applicable), donation amount and securely enter your credit card information. This is also the page where you will decide between playing In-Person or Virtually.

Before you go any further, we must thank the Underwriters and Business Patrons that have made this wonderful event possible. Please note their logos at the bottom of this page and their ads in our program.

INFORMATION FOR ALL PLAYERS

All virtual players, which is now everyone, will receive an email with a downloadable PDF of their competition crossword grid before September 25th. But, guess what, it doesn’t mean squat without the clues! Included in this email will be a folder with all the "Other Games" and a 2nd folder with all the "Other Games Answers."

Then, on September 25th, the clues will be emailed to all players at 2:00 pm.

As at the in-person event, all participants start their timing as soon as they start reading the clues. (Coordinate with your teammates if you are not together.) But instead of Cornell’s APO monitors starting their stop watches, you will start yours. When you or your team have a completed puzzle, you will put down your pencils and note the time. You will take a photo of your finished puzzle and email or text it to me, along with your exact time (Hence, "Honor" Competition). That’s it! (Please submit your puzzle by 6pm on Sunday, September 26th.)

All three correct competition puzzles will be posted along with the winners' names and times on our website after the event.

HOW TO COMPETE AS A VIRTUAL TEAM

(If you are unable to physically get together with your teammates)

  • All players will receive an email with a downloadable PDF of their competition crossword grid before September 25th. (Open and print any time before receiving the clues.)
  • Coordinate a Zoom/Skype meeting with your teammates. (If a team of only two players, cellphones on speaker would also work.)
  • When all players have a puzzle and pencil in front of them, simultaneously open the emails with the clues, and start the stopwatch.
  • Do not stop your timer until you have all decided that the puzzle is finished. If, after stopping the clock, a change is needed to be made, it is too late. So, be sure everyone on the team agrees with your final puzzle.

When registering, you will 1) select your skill level, 2) enter your team information (if applicable), 3) donation amount and 4) securely enter your credit card information. This is also the page where you can fill in any sponsorship information.

Included with the PDF of your competition crossword grid will be downloadable "Other Games" for your entertainment. Your only prizes will be some fun and, especially with the expanded "Trivia Quiz," some wee edification and spiritual growth. The "Other Games" answers are included in your competition grid email.
