Event description

Description

The 10th annual Night of Vonnegut will be a celebration like never before. Imbibe with friends and enjoy an evening of mingling, local eats, and a visit from guests who are truly out of this world. Dress in your best 1969 throwback attire as we are celebrating 50 years since the publishing of Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five!

We are thrilled to annouce Salman Rushdie, author of The Satanic Verses, Midnight's Children, The Golden House, and many others, will give this year's special keynote address and answer questions from Douglas Brinkley and our audience. The evening will also feature the presentation of our annual Common Decency Award and scholarships to two Shortridge High School student writers!

Salman Rushdie is one of the most highly celebrated and influential authors of our time. Not only has his work won some of the world's top literary prizes and awards, but Rushdie has also received a Queen's Knighthood for his "services to literature." He has also been an advocate and voice for free speech and served for two years as president of The PEN American Center, the world’s oldest human rights organization.

Douglas Brinkley is the Katherine Tsanoff Brown Chair in Humanities and Professor of History at Rice University, the CNN Presidential Historian, and contributing editor at Vanity Fair. He was selected as the official U.S. Presidential Historian at the New-York Historical Society and is a member of the Century Association, Council of Foreign Relations, and the James Madison Council of the Library of Congress. He is the award-winning author of Cronkite and The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
