The Nigeria’s Emerging Political Leaders Forum is a non-partisan, high level, multi-stakeholder conference that will bring together young leaders and political stakeholders to facilitate dialogue and action on the challenges facing Youth Participation ahead of the 2019 General Elections.

In particular, the Forum is a KNOW HOW TO Forum, to open young leaders up to political knowlege and strategies.

Holding in Lagos (South West), Calabar (South South), Imo (South East), Abuja (North Central), Kano (North West), Adamawa (North East)

The event is hosted as part of a series of conscious efforts and action plans to fulfil the aspirations of the Agenda 2063 of an Africa whose youth shall be socially, economically and politically empowered through the full implementation of the African Youth Charter, An Africa of 2063 that will have full gender parity, with women occupying at least 50% of elected public offices at all levels; an aspiration achievable with the youth.

The Forum organised by GLEEHD Foundation and the Commonwealth Africa Initiative will provide a veritable platform for the generation of new Ideas, opportunity for networking, and ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all political levels in Nigeria.

Recent events have shown that youths are critical in bringing about social and political transformation in Nigeria. There’s a need to transform the spontaneous street protests into a more steady form of political action, and the increasing Youth energy cum leadership awareness must be harnessed for national development. The Nigerian demographics demonstrate clearly that the unity of the country will fundamentally depend on how young people are treated and what role, in the different facets of her political life; they choose/are allowed to be involved in. When youths are excluded from political, economic and social spheres and processes, it can be a risk factor for violence and violent forms of conflict. Therefore, identifying and addressing the social exclusion of young people is a precondition for sustaining peace.

The Conference which will gather Young Aspirants, stakeholders interested in playing a role in the Nigerian political space, members of the diplomatic community and donor agencies representatives, Political Leaders and Development Partners among others will provide a unique platform for aspiring young people to showcase and sell their political ideas and interact with political leaders, senior policymakers, corporate executives, and civil society leaders from across the country.

The forum, will also see the Regional launch of the GLEEHD Political Leadership and Governance Academy – and the Ready, Run, WIN Project; an academy designed to empower young aspirants on the technical know-how of running for public office the state and national level.

We believe that Nigeria must subscribe to the new trend of youthful political leadership in developed climes. From Luxembourg, Canada, Ireland to the election of 39-year old Emmanuel Macron in France, the world is changing and Nigeria must follow suit. There must therefore be a deliberate attempt to eradicate the systemic alienation of Young Africans from the political process in a conscious attempt to secure a political future for the country.

The Nigeria’s Emerging Political Leaders Forum will provide a high-level platform for deliberations on how to create more space for younger people in elected public offices by formulating recommendations that will culminate into sustainable youth friendly policies and regulations. The forum will also provide a unique opportunity for youth leaders and aspiring young leaders in Nigeria to network and exchange views on increasing youth participation in the 2019 general election.
