About this event
These three artists improvisational excursions fluidly bridge the worlds of avant-jazz, minimalism, and indie rock.
Nick Zinner (aka 13 million year old ghost) is renowned as the audacious guitarist for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, though he also co-leads the grindcore band More Pain and last summer unveiled his four-part symphony “41 Strings,” written to commemorate Earth Day. He has collaborated and/or performed with Bright Eyes, The Haxan Cloak, TV On The Radio, Santigold, Africa Express and more.
Montreal violinist violinist, composer and singer Jessica Moss is best known for her 15-year tenure in political post-punk band Thee Silver Mt. Zion, as well as co-founding avant-klezmer ensemble Black Ox Orkestar. She’s recorded with Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista, Big|Brave, Jem Cohen, and many others. In recent years she’s been newly ascendant as a soloist, captivating audiences with gritty, warmly expressive electronic- and drone-inflected post-classical minimalism (and sometimes maximalism), accented by a distinctive melodic sensibility that channels Klezmer, Balkan and Middle Eastern tropes.
Brooklyn-based saxophonist and composer Travis Laplante leads Battle Trance, the acclaimed tenor saxophone quartet as well as Subtle Degrees, his newest project with drummer Gerald Cleaver. He is also known for his solo saxophone work and his longstanding ensemble Little Women. Laplante has recently performed and/or recorded with Peter Evans, So Percussion, Buke and Gase, and Ingrid Laubrock, among others.
