Event description

Description

Taste the coffee and meet the leaders and farmers behind the internationally recognized Nicaraguan coffee cooperative, Aldea Global, during an interactive tasting and light reception.

Social impact investor Oikocredit is teaming up with Building New Hope, a Pittsburgh based non-profit who collaborates with Central Americans to build sustainable livelihoods, to introduce you to the delicious taste and compelling stories behind quality organic coffee and the communities that produce it.

Maria Mercedes Aleman will join us from the Jinotega region of Nicaragua to share the stories and experience of Aldea Global. Aldea is a recognized leader not only in producing delicious coffee but in building strong and thriving communities where women own land and hold positions of leadership, where farmers retain more of their profits, and where a diverse array of community programs contribute to a sustainable and productive future.

Come for the coffee and stories, stay for the connections with a broad array of locals interested in and working at the intersection of coffee, social investing, and sustainable development.

Light refreshments will be served following the tasting.

Oikocredit International is a worldwide cooperative that promotes sustainable development by providing loans, investments and capacity building to the microfinance, agriculture and renewable energy sectors. As a social investor, Oikocredit’s work is guided by the principle of empowering people to improve their livelihoods. Oikocredit US promotes and facilitates the global work of Oikocredit International to catalyze a movement supporting a partnership approach to social investing and to promote economic ecosystems that enhance human dignity and sustainability.

Building New Hope partners with the worker-owned organic coffee cooperative El Porvenir in Nicaragua, operates two supplemental schools for at-risk youth, and provide high school scholarships for students in need, also in Nicaragua. In Pittsburgh, Building New Hopes engages with local schools and universities, faith groups, farmers, non-profits, community groups, and businesses to promote healthy ecosystems and to spread awareness about how fair trade relationships can help to reduce poverty and inequalities.
