NHSDC Fall Institute (October 16th)

HMIS Data Maturity and Data Analytics Institute

To successfully change the homeless service system and improve projects, the community needs reliable and comprehensive information. Critical to this is the ability of CoCs to examine HMIS data sets in order to find patterns and draw conclusions. Once analyzed, the results can be presented to target stakeholder groups, allowing for improved service and resource decision-making. This year, the Institute is divided into two, all day tracks from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Both are beginning to intermediate level.  The attendee will select a single track for registration and is expected to bring a laptop and power cord.  Boxed lunches will be provided.

The Data Maturity track helps CoCs build community capacity to: connect data analytics with data-driven decision-making and dig deeper into data with stakeholders to drive system improvements. Attendees will have opportunities to participate in small group exercises to build a shared understanding of how to use data to identify factors impacting system performance, prioritize goals, and drive action planning.

Intended Audience: CoC or HMIS data leaders

Prerequisite: Familiarity with CoC system performance measures and planning processes; HUD and USICH goals; and CoC data management tools (HMIS, HDX, APRs, etc.)

  • Overview of System Modeling Concepts and Tools
  • Data Maturity Assessment Tool
  • Part One - Data Maturity Overview
  • Part Two - Data Action Cycle
  • Part Three - Data Story Telling

The Data Analytics track starts with an introduction to analytical tools to help CoCs improve system and project performance. The learn applied analytics concepts and basic statistical methodologies in social service settings. Explore the use of macros, advanced pivot tables, slicers, and dashboards using Excel. Understand how to structure data, build dashboards and publish. Hear from local experts that have experience using these analysis packages along with live data reporting tools.

Intended Audience: Data analysts, HMIS System Administrators

Prerequisite: Basic Excel skills (e.g. spreadsheet organization and management, simple formulas, tables, etc.); familiarity with HMIS csv data and/or structured datasets; and knowledge of system performance measures
