Event Details

The National Health IT Collaborative for the Underserved, Inc. (NHIT Collaborative) will be convening the Spring Summit, “Health Disparities and The Heckler Report: 30 Years in Focus – Game-Changing HIT Solutions,” to be held April 22, 2015 in Washington DC.

Conference Description
By commemorating the 30th anniversary of the release of The Heckler Report, the Spring Summit will highlight the need to use health information technology as a tool to close health gaps first documented at the Federal level three decades ago and continuing today. The Summit will focus on practical solutions that HIT in different configurations can offer. One area of discussion will be social determinants affecting health status and health outcomes, such as business development, strategic investments and HIT-related workforce development through apprenticeships, internships and placements. Summit participants will also focus on strategies to engage health providers, consumers and entrepreneurs in the development and vetting of culturally and linguistically appropriate HIT applications. In addition the Summit will afford an opportunity to present to policy-makers recommendations to utilize telemedicine to eliminate racial/ethnic and other disparities aggravated by geography, inadequate health care access and low income status.  While the focus of discussion at the Spring Summit is on multicultural underserved communities, presenters will offer solutions to help transform the nation’s health care ecosystem for the benefit of all.  NHIT Collaborative continues to hold to a vision that all individuals in the United States ultimately have the tools, and use them, to attain and maintain their highest level of health and wellness.

Accordingly, this conference will contribute to the strengthening of the five key pillars of an effective and efficient health ecosystem as envisioned by NHIT Collaborative:

  • Consumer knowledge of health and HIT and their full participation as partners in safeguarding and managing their own health and the health of their families
  • Adoption of HIT by providers serving multicultural communities, and their equitable participation in programs that support delivery of high quality, cost effective care
  • Effective  educational, training and placement programs available to members of multicultural communities that can prepare them for HIT and health-care related careers
  • Establishment and implementation of policies that support individual and community health empowerment and promote system transformation
  • Identification of priority areas where gaps exist in the ability to use Health IT to address disparities, and delineation of  actionable next steps

Conference Objectives

We plan to achieve these objectives:

  • Utilize the commemoration of The Heckler Report’s 30th anniversary as an opportunity to renew public and private sector commitments to produce measurable results in closing health gaps.
  • Unveil the public/private business case innovation challenge initiated by HHS and NHIT Collaborative
  • Introduce new partnerships and opportunities to ensure the participation of underrepresented individuals in HIT-related educational, training, apprenticeships and careers
  • Open doors to new partnerships involving vendors, government agencies, foundations, educational/training institutions and multicultural community entrepreneurs and organizations
