Event description

Description

Join us for the second annual walking tour around the ENTIRE Newtown Creek in a single day. Forming the currently undefended border of Brooklyn and Queens, our lugubrious cataract of municipal neglect is surrounded by heavy industrial zones, 23 open sewers, is a Federal Superfund site, is the destination for a significant percentage of NYC's trash, and is arguably one of the birth places of the American Petroleum Industry. There's a giant oil spill, a manufactured gas plant, and don't dare ask us about the whole "swill milk" thing when crossing through LIC's Blissvillle.

The Creekathon will start in LIC, and end in Greenpoint. It will swing through the neighborhoods of LIC, Blissville, Maspeth, Ridgewood, East Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Greenpoint, visiting the numerous bridges that traverse the Creek. While we encourage folks to join us for the full adventure, attendees are welcome to join and depart as they wish. A full route map and logistics are forthcoming. This is an all day event. Your guides on this 14 mile trek will be Mitch Waxman and Will Elkins of the Newtown Creek Alliance, and some of their amazing friends will likely show up along the way.

There will be a bathroom and food break somewhere halfway through (last year we stopped at the Goodfellas Diner in Maspeth. NCA is running this tour for free, but we ask that attendees register here. Donations are more than welcome.

Attendees should wear sturdy and comfortable closed toed shoes. Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and a water bottle are highly recommended. Folks may also want to bring their cameras, to document the sights and scenes of Newtown Creek. Email us with any questions: info@newtowncreekalliance.org

Exact route map forthcoming.
