Event description

Description

Will your child invent the next generation of consumer electronics? Or just use them?

Will your child use tech to help solve world hunger? Or just read about it?

Will your child re-define digital art? Or just go to view it in galleries and museums?

Technological innovation is constant and rapid in today’s world. Every domain, industry and field is being transformed by technology.

Sadly, the education system and schools are struggling to keep up. Many schools aren’t offering adequate technology education which prepares students for digital citizenship, further study and work options.

Parents can play a key role in making sure that their children have a solid foundation to understand technology: how it works, why it works and how to create technological solutions.

‘How to Raise an Innovator’ Class for Parents

NewTechKids invites parents of children ages four to 12 to register for this evening class focused on practical steps that parents can take to shift their children from being technology users to becoming technology creators, producers and makers.

During this two-hour class, NewTechKids will share the teaching approach it has used successfully for the past four years to teach primary school-aged children design, computer science and programming as well as important 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and collaboration and communication.

Special attention will be given to discussing strategies to engage girls and children who haven’t previously been exposed to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) or who lack confidence in these areas.

We’ll provide recommendations for activities that parents can do with their children at home, according to different age ranges.

Parents will also participate in hands-on demos of some of the learning toys and tools recommended by NewTechKids for primary school-aged children.

The class will be taught by Deborah Carter, NewTechKids’ Co-founder, and Bram Stamkot, NewTechKids’ Head teacher.

The class will be taught in English. Assistance will be provided in Dutch on an individual basis.

When: Wednesday, January 30

Time: 19:00 – 21:00

Where: Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam / Amsterdam Public Library, Oosterdokskade 143 (5-minute walk from Centraal Station)
