Theme: Re-inventing the Wheel and Old-School Tools with Technology

NewTechKids is organising this summer school enrichment program to introduce kids ages 7-12 to computer science and help them acquire important 21st century knowledge and skills.

During this week-long program of five, daily lessons, kids will become technologists who design, build and program updated versions of everyday tools such as wheels using technology.

Participating kids will begin by discussing inspiring technology case studies and evaluating their pros, cons and implications before being introduced to important computer science concepts found in all technology. They'll then work in pairs and teams to complete a series of class challenges during which they will design, build and/or program solutions and technology prototypes based on computer science concepts. Each lesson will end with team presentations during which kids practise presenting their work and giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Computer science concepts covered will include automation, programming, algorithms, loops, input/output, parts working together, feedback, sequences, variables, and design cycles. Kids will use prototype solutions using a combination of arts and crafts materials, Ozobot robots, littleBits and LEGO Mindstorms.

Workshops will take place daily from 10:00-13:00 on the following dates:
– August 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, 2018

Our program will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by professional teachers with specialised computer science education training. The curriculum and lessons are based on NewTechKids' pedagogy which focuses on concept-context learning and the use of tangible objects.

Our program is ideal for children with no previous exposure to computer science and those who have previously participated in NewTechKids programs.

A minimum of 15 students is required to offer this program. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the program is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.

Light snacks and drinks will be provided and children can also bring healthy food from home.

This program is organised in partnership with Maakplaats 021, the Amsterdam Municipal Library’s network of Maker spaces in its branches.

NewTechKids is a company on a mission to provide children in primary school with computer science and technology education (computational thinking, algorithmic thinking, programming, systems thinking, design and prototyping and technological literacy). NewTechKids develops computer science curriculum, lesson plans and teaching materials for children ages four to 12 and our programs are delivered during and after school as well as well as during school holidays. We also organize teacher training programs because we believe that training primary school teachers is the best way to bring computer science education to all children.
