Upon recognizing the need for a fire protection service in town, a group of local residents took on the task of organizing what is now the Newington Volunteer Fire Department. The first meeting of the Department was held on April 04, 1917 in the Town Hall, which was located on Main Street at the time. This dedicated group worked to secure funds to purchase the town’s very first fire apparatus and equipment. In 1929, the Department was reorganized under the Board of Fire Commissioners, which resulted in the construction of three firehouses and the purchase of three new fire engines and equipment.
Fast forward nearly 100 years, the Department is still a 100% volunteer organization! We pride ourselves on providing the highest quality of fire suppression and rescue services to the residents of Newington. We also hold our core of over 100 volunteers to the highest standards of training, and remain committed to providing residents with messages of life safety and fire prevention. onies raised or donated to this event will directly benefit the Newington Volunteer Fire Departments 100th Anniversary celebrations! A series of exciting events, including a parade and firefighter ball, will take place during 2017. Funds will also be applied to the restoration of our firehouse museum on Main Street, including two of our original 1929 Buffalo fire engines! All residents will be invited and are encouraged to help us in celebrating the long standing, proud and strong traditions of our Fire Department.
The Newington Police and Fire Department have been and will continue to celebrate the lives of MPO Peter J. Lavery and Officer Ciara McDermott. In honor of these two Newington officers, a portion of the monies raised will also benefit each of their scholarship funds.
