Description

Join us for an engaging conversation between Award-winning journalist Matthew L. Schuerman and Ernest Brown!

Matthew L. Schuerman blends explorations of policy decisions with detailed narratives of developers, activists, and public officials to explain how gentrification became such a contested phenomenon, in his new book, " Newcomers: Gentrification and Its Discontents", from the University of Chicago Press. He focuses on three cities—New York, Chicago, and San Francisco—and hones in on the past and present of the Mission District in particular. Kirkus Reviews called Newcomers "illuminating " and "informed," and said, “The author humanizes the community transformations so that readers who have never set foot in those locales—and even those who know them personally—fully comprehend the dynamics involved."

Matthew L. Schuerman is senior editor at WNYC public radio in New York. His coverage of urban issues has appeared in The New York Times, The Village Voice and The New York Observer. For more information, visit matthewschuerman.com.

Ernest Brown is Co-Executive of East Bay for Everyone, a network of advocates speaking up for housing abundance and better cities all over the East Bay. Ernest leads their partnership strategies, specifically with other local progressive organizations like the East Bay Young Democrats and TechEquity Collaborative. Ernest also leads electoral activism and oversaw the endorsement of local candidates and efforts to knock over 10,000 to support pro-housing candidates in 2018. Ernest is a native of Atlanta, GA and currently lives and works in Oakland.
