Description

Hike Rating: Moderate; 3 miles (total distance of four short hikes)

Guide: John Magee, FANs Member

This hike will explore some of the extraordinary volcanic wonders within Newberry National Volcanic Monument, including four separate short hikes with an overall total of 3 miles.

Hike Series:

Trail of the Molten Land - Begins adjacent to Lava Lands Visitor Center at the north end of the Monument - 1 mile loop on a paved interpretive trail across a basalt flow to a viewpoint. Elevation gain is 150 ft.

Lava Butte Rim – This 0.5 mile trail circles the rim of the cinder cone volcano with great views. Elevation gain is 150 ft. There will be a shuttle bus from the Visitor Center to the fire lookout tower at the top of the crater - $2 per person. Exact change is requested as the driver does not give change.

Paulina Falls - After completing the above hikes, we will leave Lava Lands Visitor Center and drive to the south end of the Monument. After a very short walk from the parking lot to view the falls from near the top, the hike will then include the 0.5 mile down and back hike to enjoy the spectacular view from along Paulina Creek near the bottom of the falls. Elevation gain is 200 ft.

Big Obsidian FlowThis hike begins with ascending a steep flight of stairs to be surrounded by a huge flow of black volcanic glass on a 1 mile loop with great views. Elevation gain is 500 ft. This hike will end close to 3:00 p.m.

Notes: Please pack a lunch/snacks and bring plenty of water. Prepare in case of mosquitoes. Sturdy shoes or boots are a must for this adventure. The trail at the Big Obsidian Flow is very rough and rocky, and best hiked very slow and careful to avoid any ankle sprains or leg injuries. Having good balance is also very important for walking over rocks on the trail. The Monument fee is $5 per car, or free with one of the Federal passes. Group will meet at the south end of Bend Walmart parking lot (see driving directions below).

Group size is limited to 10 people, and dogs are not allowed on this hike. If you sign up and later need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible so that people on the wait list can be invited to join this hike.

Driving Directions: Group will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the south end of the Bend Walmart parking lot for orientation and possible carpooling. From the Bend Parkway heading south, turn east at Powers Rd. Turn right on 3rd St. (business 97). Then turn right at Pinebrook, and another right turn into the Walmart parking lot. Meet on the right side of the parking lot as you look towards the store, adjacent to Pinebrook Blvd. across from Albertsons. From the Parkway heading north, take the Pinebrook exit east, turn left into the Walmart parking lot. For carpooling from Crooked River Ranch, or other locations, please call John Magee at (831) 521-4305.
