New Sounds in American Music
Celebrated jazz pianist Ran Blake returns to the Lilypad on December 17th for an evening of New Sounds in American Music. Ran Blake is joined by the husky and wild voice of folk singer Lukas Papenfusscline. The two will tear through the American songbook, from jazz and folk tunes to original pieces by Gunther Schuller and Amy Winehouse. "In a career that now spans five decades, pianist Ran Blake has created a unique niche in improvised music as an artist and educator. With a characteristic mix of spontaneous solos, modern classical tonalities, the great American blues and gospel traditions, and themes from classic Film Noir, Blake’s singular sound has earned a dedicated following all over the world. His dual musical legacy includes more than 40 albums on some of the world’s finest jazz labels, as well nearly 40 years as a groundbreaking educator at Boston’s New England Conservatory."
"NYC Vocalist Sami Stevens combines Soul, Jazz, Experimental and RnB sensibilities to forge a truly unique voice in original music. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Sami has performed with world renowned jazz pianist Jason Moran and 6-time Grammy nominee Fred Hersch, recorded with experimental music legends John Zorn and Gary Wilson, and opened for artists as diverse as Grammy nominated folk singer Greg Brown and Black Star MC Talib Kweli. Sami has toured the US and Europe with various projects, appearing at NYC venues like the Cutting Room, Brooklyn Bowl, and National Sawdust. She has led the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, performed numerous times in Boston's famous Jordan Hall, and sung the national anthem in Fenway Park at age 16. Sami acts as lead vocalist for the widely celebrated faux Italian 70’s soundtrack band Tredici Bacci, which is anticipating its sophomore release through NNA tapes. Sami also tours frequently with Elise Testone, a recent American Idol finalist. In 2014, Sami released the Melting EP, a collection of music written for strings, drums and voice.
Sami's latest project is her All-Star Band, which she started in the summer of 2015. Writing music inspired by modern RnB, classic soul, and modern jazz, Sami has decided to focus on performing the kind of music she wants to hear when she goes out on a weekend; honest and good. Sami Stevens and Her All-Star Band can be heard tightening up their set all over NYC and Brooklyn. They are currently working on finishing up their first album, to be released in the Fall of 2016."
