The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in 1865. Yet, over 2 million adults are now incarcerated under the current criminal justice system. Ava DuVernay's documentary, 13th, draws parallels between the system of slavery and that of mass incarceration to spark a debate about true liberation and the extent to which criminal justice has become the new form of enslavement.
