Description

An Important Choice for Young New Yorkers

New York State recently lowered the organ donor registration age from 18 to 16. Now New Yorkers 16 and older are asked if they wish to register as an organ donor when they obtain a driver’s permit or license, non-driver ID, or idNYC, or register to vote. In order to make an informed decision, high school students need to understand what organ donation is and why they are being asked about it.

New Unit of Study Launches

The New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) and LiveOnNY, the nonprofit organization that facilitates organ donation in the greater NYC area, created a 5-lesson unit of study that educates students about organ donation so they are better able to make an informed decision. Living Environment teachers can incorporate the lessons during the homeostasis unit or as review.

Engaging & Relevant

NYC teachers who piloted the lessons last spring gave highly positive reviews. Interactive activities engage students through case studies, infographics, videos, text, and blogs – providing a real-world context for the teaching of Living Environment content related to homeostasis and immunity.
