The New Haven Climathon, organized by the grassroots organization Reimagining New Haven in the Era of Climate Change, is a half-day event focused on raising awareness about the local impacts of climate change, engaging with diverse communities, and catalyzing action.
The afternoon starts with a series of brief but compelling presentations about climate justice, the role of the arts in addressing climate change, sea level rise and coastal flooding, climate literacy education, rising temperatures, droughts and water shortages, food scarcity and rising food prices, and the challenges of dealing with high housing costs at the same time that people from around the world are immigrating to other countries in response to climate change. There will be a feedback session.
Presenters will include Karen Seto, the Frederick C. Hixon Professor of Geography and Urbanization Science at the Yale School of the Environment; Kwadwo Adae, artist and activist; Adrian Huq, of the New Haven Climate Movement, Doreen Abubakar, of the Newhallville Learning Corridor, Bruni Pizzaro of Junta for Progressive Action, and many others.
Here are the topics of the presentations:
- Youth Leadership on Climate Justice
- The Role of Arts and Imagination
- Living with Rising Water
- Living with Hotter Temperatures
- Living with Droughts and Water Shortages
- Living with Food Shortages and Higher Prices
- Addressing Immigration and Affordable Housing Challenges
- Increasing Climate Literacy
The second session focuses on solutions. We'll conduct a half-dozen design charrette workshops aimed at identifying promising responses to the local impacts of climate change and taking action.
All are welcome. The event is free. We will have real-time sign language and Spanish translation. We will have child care. In addition, there will be drinks and snacks.
