Essays and Grammar with Gretchen Bernabei:

Training of Trainers

New Braunfels, TX

July 8, 2019 - July 11, 2019

8:00am - 2:30pm each day

This workshop will weave between grammar, writing and reading across the curriculum, using materials Gretchen has authored and adapted from STAAR released tests and live student STAAR essays.

Participants will receive copies of

  Text Structures from Fairy Tales

  Grammar Keepers

  Fun-Size Academic Writing

plus many free resources, including TEKS alignment documents

Who is it for?

This four-day session would benefit anyone who works in staff development with other teachers OR teachers who would like to receive a more thorough training in the work of Gretchen Bernabei.  It will focus on kid-centered, healthy, authentic writing strategies, while containing serious STAAR preparation.

For every grade of writing, 3-12.

Is this the same as Gretchen's previous workshops?

This four-day intensive workshop will include strategies from previous workshops, but extended and explored for practical implementation.  Participants will explore the many ways to use text structures and kernel essays throughout the year, besides the “STAAR essay,” incorporating them into other content area writing and responding to literature.  The participants will also have an opportunity to experience the gradual release from guided kernels to independent choices, to using the “text chunkyard” to create their own structures.  Also, we’ll explore the role of classroom management and instructional delivery, with ways to improve both.

Why is this a "Training of Trainers"?

Most school districts hope that teachers who attend great staff development will come home to the campus and share what they learned, whether formally or informally.  This four-day intensive session will equip instructional coaches or other instructional leaders (including classroom teachers) to conduct multiple sessions throughout the school year.

Could teachers attend?

Sure!  Even teachers who have never been to one of her workshops!  Gretchen will offer deep coverage of the basics:

Systematically teaching grammar within the context of student writing

Nailing fragments and run-ons, using the sentence wringer

Wiping out usage problems ( like its/it’s and there/their/they’re) once and for all

Showing your students how to use their parts-of-speech knowledge

Keeping track of your grammar-teaching-in-context

Kernelizing passages for author's moves

Recognizing and using pitchforking in questions

Extracting text structures from passages

Generating quick lists and kernel essays

Choosing from five text structures for expository or persuasive essays

Using icons for developing details

 What people are saying:

Gretchen was beyond comical and accurate but precisely on point.  Her lessons and explanations were super clear, easy to follow, and inspiring! Never have I wanted to go back to the beginning of the school year and start all over.  She’s amazing and her knowledge will empower me to continue to instill tools and knowledge to my life long learners. Thank you so much!

                                    -Jaclyn Bagos, Spring Branch

One of the best trainings I have ever been to. I have been searching for a grammar training that would be practical and usable on my campus…and is it!  All the lessons and activities are all doable for all of my students.  That is very hard to say about grammar.

                                    -Eliazar Rodriguez, Sheldon

I am a first year teacher and I have been overwhelmed with the different ways to teach writing and grammar (and lack of training I had in college).  This training was just what I needed! The ideas are simple and easy to implement and I feel like they are going to be more effective than the approaches I have been using.

-Kim Johnson, Shertz – Cibolo-Universal City

I throughly enjoyed your workshop on Grammar Keepers. The delivery of material is both insightful and entertaining. It’s what a classroom should be. It’s not staff development. It’s Gretchen Bernabei!

                                     -Clifton Gaddis, Dallas

There are too many boring, useless professional development sessions. Thankfully today’s session was neither.  Today was fun and useful. I will go back to class tomorrow with active strategies that will greatly improve the environment, the learning, and writing. I can’t wait to start and that’s amazing since I’m not great with the teaching of grammar. Thanks for making year 27 fun again!

                                    -Laurie Wilmoth, Katy

For years I’ve searched for someone who knows how to teach grammar in context.  Gretchen Bernabei does!  Our own home-grown teacher, colleague & author.

                                  -Christina Ramirez-Romo, Edgewood

I love her application of grammar into authentic, real and genuine writing. This is the one piece that has been missing for me in teaching!
                                  -Christine Hopkins, Cypress-Fairbanks

It’s not often you go to a workshop and come away with so many ideas and tricks to immediately use in the classroom.  Thank you!

                                    -Lindsey Green, Decatur

Thank you for sharing your profoundly simple and workable ideas.  I’m looking forward to making quick lists, writing kernel paragraphs, and ba-da-binging some sentences with my ELL students.

                                    -Felicia Maden, Marshall

This workshop is awesome!  Great explanations and answers to all the questions that were floating through my head on how to teach expository essays!

                                    -Tayler Griffin, Lubbock

I love that Gretchen is a Texas teacher.  She knows Texas’ expectations and Texas students.  These are lessons I will be able to implement with my 4th graders tomorrow!

                                   -Megan Baker, Montgomery

Thank you!  I am ready to teach my kids how to pass the writing on STAAR, plus some great writing strategies they can carry with them for life.

                                     -Nancy McClain, Cleveland

By demystifying writing structures and test expectations with kernel essays, Gretchen helps us see with clarity the simplicity and effectiveness of classroom writing.

                                      -Arcelia Leon, Aldine

As a first-year writing teacher for 4th grade,  I plan to use many of these strategies in my classroom immediately.

                                       -Olivia Young, Aledo

Wow! My students’ writing has drastically improved in just a matter of days! These strategies were EXACTLY what my students needed to tie everything together. EVERY student has been successful with EVERY strategy they have tried. They are thinking on a higher level, writing at a higher level, and in turn, succeeding at a higher level.

                                           -Kayla Shook, San Marcos

My STAAR scores are 90%! I couldn’t have done it without you.

                                             -Shelley Fisette, Hemphill

Our students are already learning how to use these strategies. I am amazed at how much their writing has improved in just TWO weeks! It is truly incredible.

                                                -Shera Rasmussen, Wichita Falls

Gretchen is the winner of NCTE's James Moffett Award.
