The only Grassroots Non-profit OrganizationRun By and For Military Women
Lindsay Gargotto, a United States Air Force veteran will share her story of the creation of Athena’s Sisters, an organization for all military women to use revolutionary expressions to grow in dignity and honor. Founded in January of 2014 Athena’s Sisters empower themselves through a sisterhood created by mine, body, and heart healing. Their artistic advocacy is building a community of courage.
After Lindsay left active duty service she used her benefits to earn three degrees: a Bachelors of Science in Women's and Gender Studies from the University of Louisville, a Masters of Social Work and a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Spalding University.
Lindsay also works with the Kentucky Center for the Arts in the Arts in Healing program at various mental health facilities. Her work there encompasses the creation and performance of theater with teenage girls. Lindsay also works for the University of Louisville in The Center for Promoting Recovery and Resilience program by reaching out to military families to use free trauma services for military children.
In November 2014 Lindsay was awarded Kentucky Veteran of the Year which honors one male and one female Kentucky veteran for their heroic efforts defending our country and their continued willingness to serve their neighbors and preserve our Commonwealth’s way of life.
