Description

2-Day Workshop with Michael Mannino

NeuroYoga: The Relationship between Yoga, Movement, the Brain and Mind
The overall theme of this workshop is the relationship between movement and the brain. It will cover three topics, building up to an understanding of how bodily movement in general, and Yoga in particular affect the brain and the mind, i.e., cognitive processes like attention, perception, language, decision-making, knowledge, learning and memory, and emotional regulation. The first section will cover some basics of brain sciences (neuroscience), including the how the brain is structured and how it functions and operates. The second section will cover basic concepts and theories of mind and consciousness in the philosophical and scientific literature, with a focus on the framework of a view called embodied cognition (embodied mind), the notion that not only does the brain control the body, but the body and its movement in an physical environment also shapes the mind and the brain. Armed with this knowledge, the last section will cover a plethora of the latest rigorous scientific research on how movement, both functional and natural, and Yoga, affect the brain and cognition. This section will cover a thorough review of numerous studies on how Yoga (including breathing techniques, postures, meditation) changes brain structure and function.

Outcomes:

-Understand basic structure, function, and operation of the brain, including concepts like neuroplasticity, brain networks, neural oscillation or brain waves.
-Theories of mind and consciousness.
-Begin to understand the enormous field of the neurobiology of fitness and exercise, especially concerning flexibility and mobility. For example, we now know that flexibility is more a central nervous system thing, and less a muscle thing.
-How the breath is related to the brain, and the importance of the vagus nerve.
-You’ll get some hands on experience with neurotechnology like neurostimulation and neurofeedback, how they can have enhancing effects, on cognition, movement, and wellness.
-Understand some brain disorders, and how yoga may help.

Fee: $175
