Event description

Description

Within groups, organizations, communities, and societies, diversity holds the potential to act as a source of creative synergy. But this potential can only be realized where diversity is truly embraced and accommodated. This is especially true of neurodiversity––diversity among minds and brains. The current trend toward treating autism and other manifestations of human neurodiversity as “disorders” limits the achievement of human potential. Join Nick Walker for a talk on how we can reverse this trend and unleash the full creative power of neurodiversity.

Nick Walker is a faculty member at California Institute of Integral Studies, a co-founder and editor at the independent publishing house Autonomous Press, and the founder and senior instructor of the Aikido Shusekai dojo in Berkeley. He holds a 6th degree black belt in aikido and an MA in Somatic Psychology. He is widely recognized as one of the leading thinkers in the emergent field of neurodiversity, and his innovative transdisciplinary work on neurodiversity, neuroqueering, autism, embodiment, creativity, and transformative practice have made him a sought-after public speaker and consultant. His writing appears in a number of books, including Towards an Archeology of the Soul(2003),  Loud Hands: Autistic People Speaking(2012), The Real Experts: Readings for Parents of Autistic Children(2015), and The Spoon Knife Anthology (2016). He has been featured in the documentary films Orphans of Delirium(2004), Dreambody/Earthbody(2012), and Spectrum: A Story of the Mind (2015). His essays on neurodiversity and related topics can be found on his website, Neurocosmopolitanism.
