Description
"The greatest screenplay ever to remain undestroyed by Hollywood." - Salon
"Seen a quarter-century later, it is like prophecy." - Roger Ebert
After successful screenings of both Kate Plays Christine and Christine, both about the on-air suicide of news anchor Christine Chubbock, we thought it was only appropriate to show the Hollywood film so often tied to the event. Widely looked back on as a prescient indictment of media, Network follows veteran news anchorman Howard Beale (Peter Finch) who, after threatening to shoot himself on live television in response to his imminent lay-off, instead he launches into an angry televised rant, which turns out to be a huge ratings boost for the UBS network. This stunt allows ambitious producer Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) to develop even more outrageous programming, a concept that she takes to unsettling extremes.
Dir. Sidney Lumet. 1976. 121 min.
