Presentation overview

Network Security Monitoring—Catch Malicious Actors By Listening In To Their Conversations On Your Network: Malicious actors communicate at some point to make their attacks a success.   The examination of network packets will reveal unwanted activity (malware, unauthorized access, data exfiltration).   Network Security Monitoring is the process of collecting and analyzing network traffic with a focus on cybersecurity.

You’ve no doubt heard of Kali Linux for red team network penetration testing.  Vicky uses a comparable Linux open source distro for blue team called Security Onion.  This Linux distro, by Doug Burke, is for intrusion detection, network security monitoring, and log management.  It’s based on Ubuntu and contains Snort, Suricata, Bro, OSSEC, Sguil, Squert, ELSA, Xplico, NetworkMinor and many other security tools.

In this presentation, Vicky will:

  • Demonstrate how to install, configure and use Security Onion (a free and open source Linux distribution).  After the demonstration you will be able to install this today!
  • Demonstrate how to catch malicious actors using real packet captures.  After this demonstration you will be able to search for three well known attacks on your network!
