Event description

Description

The electricity industry is in the early stages of a period of unprecedented change and Western Australia's isolated grid is at the forefront of a global transition. Increasing penetration of renewables and changes in demand are so significantly influencing the system that the fundamentals of market structures, system management and network planning need to be revisited.

There have been some sensational headlines recently, but are blackouts really on the horizon? Is there a cap to how much renewables our system can take? What preparations need to be made, and what is already underway? We will hear all this and more from our great panel of experts:

  • Dean Sharafi, Group Manager - System Management, AEMO, will begin with an overview of the physical requirements of a stable system, how it is met now, and how it could be met in the future.

  • Cameron Parrotte, Executive General Manager WA, AEMO, will discuss how an evolving network needs evolving market and tariff structures to ensure appropriate market signals encourage the industry to deliver the physical requirements identified by Dean.

  • Matthew Cheney, Head of Grid Transformation, Western Power, will discuss how Western Power is investigating solutions to ensure the grid is capable of meeting these challenges and enabling customer choice – including innovative approaches to network management, alternative infrastructure and changes to the rules that guide decision-making.

The three short presentations will be followed by a facilitated discussion and Q&A. An event not to be missed for those with a stake in the grid of tomorrow.
