CFACDL Presents: Netflix Making a Murderer's Jerry Buting on Avoiding the Mere Illusion of Justice as a Criminal Defense Attorney: Thinking Outside the Box. The topics will include handling media exposure, jury selection, pretrial motions, and how to minimize police and prosecutorial misconduct and, hopefully, catch them if there is misconduct.

3.5h CLE (1.5h Ethics; 3.5h Certification Credits for Criminal Appellate, Criminal Trial, and Juvenile Law).

The cost is $25 Public Defenders/Students (ID Req'd); $35 CFACDL Members; $45 Non-Members. Wait list tickets are closed. Those on the wait list should purchase tickets before they are sold out. If walk-ins can be accommodated, it will be on a first come, first serve basis.

Registration for the event will begin at 2pm and the presentation will begin promptly at 2:30pm. After the presentation, there will be a Q&A session so come with questions ready! Happy hour on the Embassy Suites terrace to follow. It is a cash bar, but drink tickets will be distributed. Limited hor d'oeuvres.

Mr. Buting will also have copies of his book, Illusion of Justice: Inside Making a Murderer and America’s Broken System, available for sale and signing!

Speaker Biography:

Jerome F. Buting is a partner in the Brookfield, Wisconsin law firm of Buting, Williams & Stilling, S.C. He received his undergraduate degree in Forensic Studies from Indiana University and his law degree from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. He is a past board director of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the recipient of the 2017 NACDL Champion of Justice Legal Award, and a past president of the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He was a trial public defender for 9 years in Milwaukee. His present private practice is entirely criminal defense, both trials and appeals. He has defended the citizen accused in many serious high profile trial cases, including the Steven Avery case as shown in the Netflix documentary, “Making a Murderer” and he obtained the reversal of convictions in State of Wisconsin v. Ted Oswald and State of Wisconsin v. Ralph Armstrong (reversing a 29 year old murder conviction). He lectures worldwide and is frequently sought after for his knowledge in the use of expert witnesses and DNA evidence. His first book is Illusion of Justice: Inside Making a Murderer and America’s Broken System, (Harper 2017).
