Emily Carney:

Neil Armstrong Goes To The Movies: First Man and Apollo 11

This presentation discusses Neil Armstrong’s life and accomplishments as depicted in two recent movies, First Man and Apollo 11. It will ask (and hopefully answer) questions such as: Was Neil Armstrong just an astronaut, or was he more? Was he really as reclusive and publicity shy as reported? And who was Mr. Gorsky?

Emily Carney is a spaceflight author living in Saint Petersburg, Florida, whose writing credits include pieces for Ars Technica, AmericaSpace, and the National Space Society. In 2011 she founded the Facebook group Space Hipsters, which numbers over 16,300 spaceflight enthusiasts.

Dr. Holly Dunn:

No justice for the victims of witchcraft in Congo: Is this a failure of the law?

Being a witch in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a risky affair. While you won’t be arrested or imprisoned for putting a curse on your neighbors, you definitely won’t win any favors with them. Victims of witchcraft feel that the law does not protect them or achieve justice, but how do you prosecute a crime that can never be proven in a court of law? In this talk, I will share some of my experiences learning about witchcraft and the law in South Kivu, DRC.

Holly Dunn is an assistant professor of political science at USF and has spent 8 months doing research in Congo. When not cursing her 160 lb Great Dane, Scout, she spends her time reading legal texts and practicing less profane curses. But don’t blame her for any crazy laws you find in Florida, her studies in black magic are not quite that advanced.

Dr. Brandy Stark:

Two Decades of the Dead: What Paranormal Investigation Has Taught Me

St. Petersburg is all about the sunshine, but what lurks in its shadows? In it's 125 year history, this area has cultivated many unique ghostly haunts, from the vanishing hitchhiker on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, to the Mini Lights legends of Brooker Creek. Explore more about the city's spooky heritage with Brandy Stark, founder of the SPIRITS of St. Petersburg.

Brandy Stark, PhD, is a professor of Humanities and Religious Studies at St. Petersburg College. She started paranormal investigation in 1997 and founded the SPIRITS of St. Petersburg. Much of her academic research is dedicated to the roles of the supernatural in culture and includes her graduate works on ghosts in Roman culture, the role of the Danse Macabre des Femmes as a form of protofeminism, and Homer's use of the underworld to stabilize the afterlife.
