Nerd Nite returns Nov 14th

About this Event

Join us on Thursday, November 14th as we return to Stardust Video & Coffee in Audubon Park for Nerd Nite.

Nerd Nite is an evening of entertaining and educational presentations. Speakers present for 15 minutes, followed by a brief Q&A with the audience. Nerd Nite operates in over a hundred cities around the world and launched in Orlando on Thursday, March 14, 2013.

6-7pm: Nerd Nite videos

7-9pm: Presentations

Speakers Include: J.D. Casto, Ed Petersen, & Alexa S Robinson

PRESENTATION #1: "Album Covers: A Brief History" by Ed Petersen

We've always been told not to judge a book by its cover, but what about music albums? Those covers are literally designed to grab your attention, for better or worse. This presentation will give a short backstory of such images, and then launch into a mind-boggling rant-like portion showing that, no matter how hard an artist tries, it's likely all been done before...

Ed Petersen holds a B.A. in Economics from U.C.F. and currently works for the City of Orlando’s Planning Division. He's a lifelong music lover and album art enthusiast. If asked, he might just be able to free-associate album cover similarities (but don't get your hopes up). This will be his fourth Nerd Nite talk.

PRESENTATION #2: "Blood & Treasure: Modern Politics and the Golden Age of Piracy" by J.D. Casto

We tend to think of pirates as bloodthirsty thieves, brutal rapists, and vicious murderers, concerned only with indulging their every whim and amassing as much wealth as possible, forever living at the expense of others. And this is absolutely true. However, in some ways, pirates were strangely ahead of the societal curve. In fact, some of their viewpoints would be heartily endorsed by liberal politicians today - health insurance for all, democratic elections (typically without collusion), and even gay marriage. This presentation will focus on the incredible true stories of pirates and their modern policies.

Photographer, J.D. Casto is an active member of Central Florida’s LGBTQ+ activist community. His photos documenting Orlando’s recovery following the Pulse Tragedy have been seen all around the world and currently surround the Pulse Nightclub at the OnePulse Foundation’s interim memorial.

PRESENTATION #3: "Communism: The Basics and In Practice" by Alexa S Robinson

What is communism really? China tried, Russia said they had it, but did they ever get there? By the end of my presentation, the audience will know what Karl Marx envisioned communism to be, where this crazy communism idea came from, and where it is actually working today.

Alexa Robinson is a Certified Scrum Product Owner at a tech company in Lake Mary. She studied Philosophy and History for her undergraduate degree, where she wrote a thesis on social media and identity. Now she lives in Longwood with two cats and a lot of board games.
