Get ready for a family-friendly NERD CAMP! We'll have all sorts of games and entertainment and activities, along with FREE PIZZA!!! We'll also have beer, wine, and cider for $5 a glass. $5 buys a hundred pounds of food for SnowCap, so you can enjoy your glass knowing it comes with a side of a TON of food for folks who really need it!
Kids programming will run 5:30-7:30, and will include:
- A magic show by Mathias: The Charming Cardist!
- An introduction to all the fantastic superheroes from marginalized cultures, presented by Books with Pictures!
- Small group discussions about superheroes and bullying
- A concert by MEGATHRUSTER!!!!!
Kids must be accompanied by an adult - please don't buy tickets for your kids if adult tickets are sold out!
We'll kick over to the 21+ portion of the evening at 8:00, starting with Speed Friending, then on to tabletop gaming and small group discussions about all kinds of ways we as geeks can improve our lives and our community. Here's the schedule:
Self Care for Starters (Lab, 9:00) Learn how how to spoil yourself and positively affect your goals with 5min, 30min and hour long ideas to take home and try!
Socializing for the Socially Awkward (Armory, 9:00) Need help talking with strangers and making new friends? Learn core communication skills, how to socialize and build up comfort in social settings, and how to deal with being outside your comfort zone.
Share Your Art! (Lab, 9:30) Want to share your art but are too scared to, or just don't know where to start? Let's face your fears and answer your questions so you can get your art out into the world!
Community Podcasting (Armory, 9:30) What's a podcast for if you're not trying to get famous or make money? How do we define success when we make a podcast?
Geeky Parents Meet-Up (Lab, 10:00) Meet up and share resources and recommendations for raising geeks of all ages and proclivities!
Nerding for All (Armory, 10:00) Let's discuss some historic rivalries in fandom and gaming, and work out ways to avoid fracturing the community.
Planning Geeky Events (Lab, 10:30) Finding your community and getting them engaged in socializing and volunteer work. (And troubleshooting when you fail!)
I Volunteer as Tribute! (Armory, 10:30) How to run for local office and change the world! Moderated by recently elected Canby Councilor Sarah Spoon-Waffle.
Allyship Training (Lab, 11:00) Want to be a better ally? Don't know where to start? Come start the discussion of what it means to be an ally, and leave with some basic resources on things you can do. Let's make some change together!
Choose Your Own Adventure (Armory, 11:00) Make your choices as a group - but choose wisely, or you will be mocked! We'll read a classic CYOA and try not to die too many times before reaching the ending.
Intersectional Feminism for Geeks (Lab, 11:30) A discussion on understanding the dangers of privilege, exercising in ways that help others, and knowing when silence is the best way to help.
The Voice of Others (Armory, 11:30) Exploring how a writer can create and grow characters of diverse backgrounds, while avoiding harmful stereotypes. And knowing when to listen to your audience to find that honesty.
All proceeds from the event will benefit SnowCap Community Charities, which has been providing food and advocacy for our neighbors in need in East Multnomah County for almost 50 years. We'll also gratefully accept non-perishable food donations, as well as new or gently-used clothing, and hygiene supplies (especially feminine hygiene products).
