FAQs

Q. Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
A. Email Monica Gutierrez at monicaguti003@gmail.com or 479-366-1388.

Q. Who is Charles Ogar?
A. Charles Ogar is an influential instructor, DJ, organizer, and performer in the kizomba dance community. He was exposed to music and dance at an early age with a repertoire that included multiple dance forms like salsa, bachata, punta, samba, cha cha, and mambo before he devoted himself to growing the genre of kizomba in particular. Charles has taught and performed all over the States, Canada, and Europe while organizing large scale events in Texas featuring international talent of the highest caliber. He has placed in the top three at kizomba competitions such as the Annual Kizomba Festival's Jack & Jill competition in San Francisco, and he regularly interviews other influential Afro Latin dance figures such as Albir Rojas, Sekou McMiller, Sophie Fox, Laurent Yishu, Ronie Saleh, and more. Charles coined the term "Neo Kizomba" when he transitioned to teaching kizomba full time in 2014 to describe his bespoke method of instruction, the new style of kizomba music influenced most especially by hip-hop and R&B, and the style of urban kiz dancing to music that borrows from R&B and hip-hop as a development from more traditional forms of kizomba.

Q. Can I get more detail on Neo Kizomba?
A. There are multiple sub-categories of music and dance belonging to the kizomba family. With respect to the global development of the genre as whole, people often draw a distinction between so-called "traditional" forms of kizomba versus so-called "urban kiz" with "neo kiz" as one special variation on that subtype. Traditional kizomba more closely resembles the form of music and dance that originally emerged in Angola from prior forms, like semba. (In fact, many people cannot tell the difference between semba and traditional kizomba played or danced at a high tempo.) On the other hand, the neo kiz variation of urban kiz developed largely beyond Angola as kizomba spread across the world to places like Europe, the Caribbean, and South America. While urban kiz in general borrows from genres like tango, zouk, and dancehall to expand the horizon of the broader kizomba family of music and dance, neo kiz borrows more specifically from hip-hop and R&B, and it is one of the few types of kizomba developed primarily and authoritatively in the U.S. with Charles as a pioneer and chief exponent of the discipline.
