Description

Please join us for the 3rd and final cluster meeting of 2017!

Presented by the Northeast Ohio Additive Manufacturing Cluster

Sponsored by SimuTech

Topology Optimization, Brock Wilson, Senior FEA Consulting Engineer, SimuTech

Additive manufacturing, or 3-D printing, has the potential to radically change the way in which products are conceived and designed. The additive process allows for unprecedented design complexity and design freedoms. Full subassemblies can be produced in one print, eliminating costly joining operations. Parts can be customized and produced in small, made-to-order batches. Parts can be produced when and wherever needed — at home, in the workplace or battle field, at the assembly line. For additive manufacturing to become ubiquitous, and its promise fully realized, the current design and simulation tools must also radically evolve.

In support of additive manufacturing, ANSYS 18.0 offers new physics-based design optimization technologies, Topology Optimization, that support workflows aimed at realizing the full potential of Additive Manufacturing. The presentation will focus on how design engineers can realize new design concepts based on material layout determined through finite element methods. Topology Optimization provides the following benefits:

Topology Optimization

  • Geometry complexity is free
  • Leverage full geometric freedoms, including lattice structures, in designs
  • Minimize number of parts
  • Reduce material waste
  • Improve durability
  • Enables superior designs via physics-driven free-form optimization methods
  • Allows for optimized designs to be validated
  • Set up and check optimized part for manufacture
