Young People Creating the Positive Leadership the World Needs

About this event

The Nelson Mandela Youth Leadership Summit 2022 on 18 July (Nelson Mandela Day) promises to be an exciting and engaging event. The Summit brings together a diverse youth population from Shepparton, Melbourne, Regional Australia, urban Australia and Asia-Pacific to create a group of connected future leaders of the region and Australia.

Born in Shepparton, the COVID lockdowns took the Summit online and allowed us to share the 2020 and 2021 summit experiences with young people and leaders spreading from New York to Africa. Young people chose the topics, and they were designed to assist them to grow into leading community players and act on the immediate most pressing challenges.

This year the historic Legislative Assembly Chamber of the Victorian Parliament in Melbourne will be the venue allowing the 88 young leaders to experience speaking in a chamber still used by the Victorian Parliament and used by the Australian Parliament before the construction of Canberra's Houses of Parliament. There will be room for supporters in the Parliament's Galleries. We welcome sponsors and volunteers.

What we have learned as the Summit has grown is that the voice of the young leaders is most inspiring. Our speakers, too, have been marvellous from the Governor General to global leadership experts to Members of Parliament to community and business leaders. Participating in the Parliamentary Chamber, we will seek to allow as many of the students to speak as practicable with the guest speakers bringing exciting ideas to provoke responses and ideas from the students and youth participants.

In 2020 and 2021, it was fostered and supported by The Gandhi Experiment's Margaret Hepworth and The Centre for Optimism's Victor Perton. The Centre for Optimism is a partner of the Nelson Mandela Regional Youth Leadership Summit Victoria with Future Voices, The Gandhi Experiment, The Gallawah Foundation and Rotary International.
