The music of Liverpool guitarist and composer Neil Campbell draws on elements of contemporary classical, progressive rock, jazz, folk and other musical styles. As a guitarist much of his recorded output reflects his writing for solo (mainly nylon-string) guitar. This includes Through the Looking Glass (2003), Night Sketches (2004), Tabula Rasa Suite (2014) and his latest recording Last Year's News (2019).

His solo performances often involve him using loops and other technology to expand the sound and scope of what one performer can do with the classical guitar. As a soloist he has performed in the UK and Europe, and has been a regular performer at the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain. He particularly enjoys playing in ‘special’ venues and has performed solo concerts in spaces such as Union Chapel (London), Lancaster Priory, Birkenhead Priory, Sheffield Cathedral, Bishop's House Sheffield, Liverpool Central Library, John Ryland’s Library (Manchester), Chetham’s School of Music Library (Manchester) and St Nicholas Church (Liverpool).

In 2008 he performed his piece Ghost Stories: A Night Opera at St Luke's Bombed Out Church (Liverpool), then the following year premiered his piece Frankenstein, based on Mary Shelley's novel at St George's Hall Concert Room (Liverpool), in collaboration with Sense of Sound Singers. In October 2013 took part in the legendary Irish Sea Sessions at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. In 2016 he contributed as co-writer to three sections on Jon Anderson and Roine Stolt’s Invention of Knowledge CD. He has recorded music and performed live with progressive bands The Neil Campbell Collective, Bulbs and After the Flood. Along the way he has also enjoyed musical collaborations with cellist Nicole Collarbone, vocalist Perri Alleyne-Hughes, producer Gordon Ross and guitarist Carlo Bowry (Wizards of Twiddly) amongst others.

His most recent work The Flood Trilogy consists of three album recordings, the neo-Baroque solo album The Outsider/News from Nowhere (2018) a concept album based on William Morris’s utopian socialist novel; After the Flood (2018), a band album that imagines what sort of music survivors of a global catastrophe might make if they were writing and playing music as a soundtrack to rebuilding a fairer world; and most recently a more solo effort, Last Year’s News (2019).

--

In this concert at 81 Renshaw Street he will be performing a selection of original music for solo guitar and he will be joined by guest musician Charlie McKeon who will perform an opening set. Charlie lives in Toxteth, Liverpool, and there he creates peaceful and melodic songs and intricate instrumentals. Initially inspired by 60’s pop and psychedelia, Charlie, 25, delved deep into the music of the folk revival artists and traditional British and American material, and then later the lo-fi bedroom artists of the 90’s and 00’s.
