Description

Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Jazz Appreciation Month in Philadelphia! The Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy is bringing FREE performances, dance classes and more to community spaces around the city with 10 free Neighborhood Jazz Days!

Join us on Friday, April 17, 2020 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Belfield Recreation Center for the fifth free Neighborhood Jazz Day. This event will feature appearances by the Kevin Valentine and the Velvet Swing, Rayburn Wright’s Jasz Lab Project, and the Julian Hartwell Project.

Kevin Valentine and the Velvet Swing bring an understanding of melody, harmony, rhythm and lyric mixed into an array of sonic hues that reflect an urban groove. Rayburn Wright’s Jasz Lab Project is an ensemble that celebrates the tradition of live big-band jazz and continuing musical education in Philadelphia. The ensemble draws both aspiring and journeyman musicians from across Philadelphia to perform jazz and crossover classics with arrangements by Mr. Wright and other Project members. The Julian Hartwell Project is a contemporary jazz quintet with an upbeat and groove-heavy aesthetic featuring up-and-coming players from the Philly scene. Drawing upon many stylistic influences, the group serves up a high-energy blend of funk, soul and fusion into a modern jazz framework that balances tradition with forward-leaning freshness.

The Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy presents Philly Celebrates Jazz, a celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month in April. All month long, OACCE showcases the influence of jazz and raises awareness about Philadelphia’s rich jazz heritage.
