Practice your negotiation skills -- live! -- with The Writers' Co-op
About this event
Practice your negotiating skills live with Jenni and Wudan of The Writers’ Co-op
As freelancers, we’re socialized to believe that we shouldn’t make a fuss, we’re disposable to our clients, and we shouldn’t rock the boat.
But those limiting beliefs often work to our detriment when we’re suddenly faced with the prospect of a negotiation – a necessary part of running your own business. After all, businesses negotiate all the time. How do you walk the line between polite and pushy? What does it look like to get an actual win-win with a new client? When should we accept the low rates that are initially offered? And what about pushing back on contract clauses?
In this one-hour live webinar, meant as a master class for those who really want to level up their negotiation game, Jenni and Wudan of The Writers’ Co-op will get into the nitty gritty of negotiating. We’ve drafted real negotiation scenarios that we’ve encountered over our collective careers in freelance, assigning editor, and managerial roles.
Attendees can volunteer themselves to negotiate live – email us! (thewriterscoop2@gmail.com)
In advance of the workshop, each volunteer will receive one scenario to workshop themselves; you’ll decide how you want to respond and what other terms you might need to negotiate. Then, we’ll walk through each scenario together, with optional participation from audience members, to show how there are multiple ways of approaching these issues both bravely and professionally. There will be time to debrief on how each negotiation went, and for audience questions.
Attendees who wish to participate in this live negotiation event should come with a sense of :
+ What their rates are
+ What services they provide
+What their boundaries are (i.e. rush assignments, time required to complete a project, preferred contractual clauses)
Attendees will walk out with practice negotiating and scripts to use immediately in their next negotiation.
A recording and transcript of the event will be sent to attendees after the event.
