Athena Leadership Labs for Barnard Students
Negotiating Sooner Rather Than Later (In partnership with Career Development) - Special 1.5 Hour Lab
Negotiating is an essential skill in MANY facets of life--with your suitemates, with your parents, or during an internship.
What comes to mind when most people hear "Negotiation?" Salary! It's true -- research shows women can lose up to $500,000 of their lifetime earnings by not negotiating their first entry-level salary.
Beyond salary though, the art of negotating is something you can practice in everyday situations to prepare you for those BIG negotiations in life. Sounds like it's important for your leadership skillset, right?
What can make the difference? Practice. Practice. Practice--the sooner, the better. Geared towards underclassmen and ANYONE interested in practicing sooner rather than later, start negotiating today with this Leadership Lab, which highlights the skills you ALREADY have to negotiate, offers mocks sessions in a friendly environment, and takes the "scary" out of negotiating. Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today?
The Athena Center believes leadership happens in multiple roles in your career, in your community, in your personal lives and relationships, and in service and support to others. Our programs support your lifelong process of sharpening your skills, advancing your positions and passions, and putting forth your best contributions--whatever the endeavor or pursuit.
The mission of Career Development is to support women in cultivating a career of their own invention that connects a liberal arts education, leadership and work-life planning.
Both departments are pleased to offer two joint Leadership Labs that explore where career and leadership development intersect.
