Withers Collection
The Withers Collection is a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public and preserve the works of Dr. Ernest C. Withers. Their goal is to provide information and educational tools and resources about contemporary African American history that has been captured through the lens of Dr. Withers, thereby connecting communities.

The Withers Collection Museum and Gallery offers a glimpse into 60 years of American history captured by renowned photojournalist and historian Dr. Withers.

Dr. Withers was a Memphis native who was one of the first (and often, only) people to cover the civil rights movement, publishing photographs of key events like the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Memphis sanitation workers strike. With more than 1.8 million images in its archive, Withers Collection Museum and Gallery is home to one of the largest photo collections amassed by a single individual. From the pre-civil rights era of the Emmitt Till trial, to the history of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., legends of the Beale Street blues, soul and R&B music era, to the founding of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Withers Collection Museum and Gallery is a mecca for historians, artists, diplomats and individuals who recognize documented history at its highest level.

Dr. Withers' works appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Tri-State Defender, the Pittsburgh Courier, Jet, Ebony, Newsweek, Life, People, Time and more. His works have been and continue to be featured in touring exhibits and shows around the world. The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. currently displays more than 30 of Dr. Withers' images. For his life’s work, Dr. Withers was elected to the Black Press Hall of Fame and received an honorary doctorate from the Massachusetts College of Art.

Located at 333 Beale Street, Dr. Withers' last operating studio, The Withers Collection Museum and Gallery has over 7,000 square feet dedicated to the preservation of Ernest Withers' legacy which includes the Gallery, Music Room, and Studio Lounge where you will stand in a unique position to have a one of a kind look into Memphis' past.
