Other Training Opportunities at Noeticus:

Training Description:

Gestalt Therapy is a somatically-oriented, experiential therapy that is deeply rooted in Humanistic and Existential psychology and that has significantly influenced and shaped many contemporary forms of psychotherapy. Developed by Fritz and Laura Perls, Gestalt Therapy draws wisdom from many traditions including psychoanalysis, Jungian psychology, existential philosophy, Zen Buddhism, and theater improvisation.

Participants in this training will learn the fundamental principles of the Gestalt approach, both as a primary therapeutic modality and as a perceptual framework that can be applied to other theoretical orientations. In particular, the Gestalt Cycle of Experience will be explored as a potent model for recognizing and understanding how needs arise in the phenomenological field and how those needs can be effectively addressed. Course participants will experientially investigate the interaction between self and environment and the various defensive strategies that can truncate or become barriers to the satisfaction of those needs by blurring the relationship between self and environment.

This training is designed for counseling psychology graduate students and post-graduate mental health professionals interested in pursuing and/or developing a stronger somatic approach and will be highly experiential in nature.

NOTE: This training can be taken independently or as one of the pre/co-requisites for the Noeticus Integrative Gestalt Therapy Certification Program.

Training Objectives:

This introductory training provides participants with an overview of the theoretical framework of Gestalt Therapy and offers an experiential opportunity to explore and practice some of the techniques associated with this potent modality. These include: 1) Recognizing the Importance of Using "The Language of Responsibility"; 2) Understanding the Layers of Personality and their Functions; 3) Using the Gestalt Cycle of Experience; 4) Recognizing and Working with Polarities; 5) Making Contact and Transforming Disruptions in Contact; and 6) Supporting Greater Self-Regulation

Training Instructor:

Ryan Kennedy, PsyD, LAC, LMFT, LPC, RN, ACS; Certified Integrative Gestalt Therapist (CIGT), is the Executive and Training Director at Noeticus Counseling Center and Training Institute. He has been a somatically-informed psychotherapist since 1993 and a counselor educator and clinical supervisor since 1996. He has extensive training in somatic and experientially-based therapies including Gestalt Therapy, Psychodrama, and many more. In addition to his experiential and phenomenological approach to therapeutic work, he also brings a strong understanding of systemic issues, attachment theory, multicultural perspectives, clinical neuroscience, developmental patterning, psychopharmacology, and intersubjectivity. Ryan was also on the faculty of the Somatic Counseling Psychology Program at Naropa University for 18 years and served as the coordinator for the Body Psychotherapy Concentration and is a Board Certified Dance/Movement Therapist (BC-DMT), a Certified Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analyst (CLMA), a Certified Massage Therapist (CMT), Certified Integrative Gestalt Therapist (CIGT), Registered Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist (RSME/T), Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT), a member of the Association for the Advancement of Gestalt Therapy (AAGT), and a founding member of the United States Association for Body Psychotherapy (USABP).
