Training Description:

Collaborative relationships are the key to effective teams. That’s because the ability to interact effectively with people isn’t just "nice-to-have" – it's non-negotiable. New goals, different team members, and changing roles, structures and accountabilities are realities that can generate poor performance. Faulty work relationships often result in conflict that impacts every aspect of delivering projects on plan and on budget. It is not the lack of knowledge, skills or motivation, but the mismanagement of relationships that creates the greatest cost to work teams.

People are complex, and that can make interacting with others challenging. At times, it can be downright impossible – but it doesn’t have to be that way. Today, people in organizations need to understand that everyone speaks a unique “collaboration language.” That’s where Core Strengths® comes in. Our training helps managers and teams understand how to engage others by communicating in ways that they comprehend. They also learn how to make the right adjustments so people’s communication needs are met when things go wrong and conflict occurs. The end result? Stronger relationships and higher productivity.

Give yourself and your team the Core Strengths® advantage. Core Strengths® integrates the communication of three business priorities based on personality preferences:

  • People – a concern for helping and developing others
  • Performance – a concern for directing action and achieving results
  • Process – a concern for establishing clear and meaningful order

Core Strengths® is powered by the Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) and the Strengths Portrait, two valid and reliable assessments that enable self-awareness. Self-awareness is essential, because it is the prerequisite to self-management, understanding others, and improving working relationships. Personality is enduring; it’s who we are. The SDI opens a window on personality by making our Motivational Value System (MVS) visible. Simply stated, the SDI shows how the three primary motives of People, Performance, and Process blend in each person. Everyone prioritizes these three primary motives differently. The SDI defines seven types – we call these Motivational Value Systems (MVSs) – based on how the three motives work together in different people.

The SDI also shows how conflict affects the way we see situations and how we choose the strengths we use. When we experience conflict, we want to protect or defend our values and commitments. In other words, our motives are different when we’re faced with conflict and they continue to change during the three stages of conflict. By looking at who we are under two conditions – when things are going well and when in conflict – we get a fuller, dynamic, and useful picture than if we adopt the faulty assumption that we have only one way of being ourselves.

NOTE: All training participants will receive their own customized SDI assessment reports, as well as all class materials, as part of their registration in this highly experiential workshop, all of which are valued at over $120.00. For that reason, it is important to recognize that you will need to dedicate between 30-60 minutes to completing the assessments prior to attending the class. To ensure that everyone has their reports printed and available for the training, please complete your assessments as soon as possible after you receive the login links.

Training Objectives:

This very practical workshop first introduces training participants to the foundational principles of the Core Strengths® Model. It then applies those concepts to very common situations and scenarios experienced by individuals and teams every day across a wide variety of work contexts. Key learning objectives for training participants are as follows:

  • Communicate effectively with your teammates and clients so you can achieve mutually beneficial results.
  • Know your strengths and deploy them at the right time for the right reason for greater effectiveness.
  • Increase people's commitment to and responsibility for achieving shared outcomes.
  • Assume a greater sense of ownership for producing results.
  • Collaborate with members of your team to make the best decisions for your organization.
  • Create a Results through Relationship Action Planner for a high-stakes situation you are facing right now.

This transformative workshop is for supervisors, team leaders, business owners, and other high-achievers committed to the belief that building and sustaining collaborative relationships is priority number one. They understand that members of their team can go further together than they can alone. They also recognize the importance of leveraging the power of collaborative communication for the mutual benefit of one and all.

Training Instructor:

Ryan Kennedy, PsyD, LAC, LMFT, LPC, RN, ACS, is the Executive and Training Director at Noeticus Counseling Center and Training Institute and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. He has been a psychotherapist since 1993 and a counselor educator and clinical supervisor since 1996. As an educator, he has been on the faculties of Front Range Community College, Naropa University, Prescott College, and University of Colorado Denver. His clinical training is in the areas of trauma and dissociative disorders, chronic and persistent mental illness, psychiatric nursing and psychopharmacology, addictions and recovery, domestic/family violence, and living with life-threatening illnesses. In addition to his extensive clinical training and experience, he also specializes in organizational development and team building consultation. Among other things, he is certified in administering the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI) as well as the Total SDI® and Core Strengths® Assessments and is a Certified Core Strengths® Facilitator through PSP, Inc in Carlsbad, California. Additionally, he completed Level Two Certification in Spiral Dynamics® with Chris Cowan and Natasha Todorovic, PhD of NVC Consulting in Santa Barbara, California.

Training Text:

This training draws from the newly revised book, Have a Nice Conflict: How to Find Success and Satisfaction in the Most Unlikely Places, by Tim Scudder, Michael Patterson, and Kent Mitchell. Training participants may benefit from purchasing this book prior to the training and bringing the book with them to the training as a resource.
