Event description
To help improve success rates for those resitting GCSE

About this Event

This is aimed at Post 16 and Secondary teachers of Mathematics

To help improve success rates for those resitting GCSE, this short course will explore ways to make the student experience different. We will consider which topics to focus on - and which to ignore- and ways of teaching to maximise impact in the limited teaching time. We will explore different approaches to the challenges of teaching resit students. There will be opportunities to try something new and then report back and share with the rest of this work group.

Intended outcomes of the workgroup are:

• Increased awareness of and effective use of appropriate pedagogies to help students make connections, deepen understanding and increase engagement

• Teachers feel more competent in teaching the new GCSE as a resit in Post-16 over 8 months

• Sharing of practice and resources which are effective with this group of students.

Dates and venue:

• First session 21st January 2020 – 09:30am to 12:30pm

• Second session – 11th February 2020 – 4:00pm – 6:00pm

• Third session – 24th March 2020 – 4:00pm – 6:00pm

• Fourth session – 28th April 2020 – 4:00pm – 6:00pm

Venue (First session): Milton Keynes College, Chaffron Way Campus, Chaffron Way, Leadenhall, MK6 5LP.

(Following sessions): Milton Keynes College, Bletchley Campus, MK3 6DR.

Course leader:

Michelle Moore has more than 30 years’ experience teaching in secondary schools and Further Education in Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire up to A-level. Michelle has led CPD sessions to specialist and non-specialist maths staff and for the NCETM, of which she has been a member since the 2000’s.

Michelle has taught GCSE maths resit in FE for a number of years and has developed a variety of strategies to engage this often difficult to motivate group of students. She has also worked with staff who have not taught GCSE before and this puts her in an excellent position to be aware of the difficulties learners face in understanding mathematical ideas. She uses these experiences to try and make a resit course as interesting, accessible and meaningful as possible and looks forward to sharing her knowledge.
