NICA On-the-Bike Skills 101
In this clinic, you'll learn the NICA-endorsed training method, which includes the progressive steps needed to teach anyone (even yourself) both basic and advanced mountain biking skills. You will also learn about experiential teaching techniques, how to accommodate different learning styles, and how to create a positive learning environment for young riders.
The intent of this training is to show participants a great example of a NICA practice involving skills instruction and a NICA short course for student-athletes. Attendance for this event will be limited to 10 participants to ensure that coaches feel confident and comfortable teaching our students mountain biking skills. Remember, although you may learn some new skills from the event, the focus is not on enhancing your own mountain biking skills, but instead on how to teach the basic skills.
This training is ideal for new coaches and/or those that were not able to attend the Leaders’ Summit.
During the training, you will not only have time to practice the skills as demonstrated, but you will also have the opportunity to practice teaching the skills while receiving feedback. This will allow you to see the teaching style of others as you develop your own.
This clinic will be taught by Shawn Moore and Michael Eastwood who are Coach Supporters for the North Carolina Interscholastic Cycling League. Michael and Shawn are Level 3 Head Coaches with teams here in NC and both are IMBA ICP certified skill instructors.
To help keep the cost of the event low, lunch will not be provided. We ask that you bring your own lunch as you will not have time to run out to get lunch due to time constraints and location. Feel free to bring snacks you can have while on the bike throughout the day. This event will be rain or shine, so please bring appropriate riding gear for the weather.
If the weather is good we suspect that an optional group ride may materialize afterward.
