Event description
Global (Dis)Ease: Resilient Group Leading Now

About this Event

NCGPS Annual Fall Event 2020

Presenter: Katie Griffin, FAGPA, CGP, LPC

Course Description:

The role of a group leader today challenges all of us. What does it mean to be a group leader in this paradigm? This conference will address the pressure to be resilient in the face of global crises. We will explore together our existing assets available for use in new ways.

Participants will learn how to handle the impact on group members of a pandemic, polarizing political climates, systemic racism and climate change, assist them with responses to turbulent economics, gender-based and racially oppressive systems, help them talk to each other about the emotionally significant journey of their lives while broadening their capacity for here and now intimacy. It will also help us learn how to deal with our own reactions to all of these subjects while holding and bearing the larger part of anxiety created by life in our society, and do this online.

This will be a didactic and experiential event.

We intend this event to be suitable to all therapy and group therapy practitioners, inclusive of ethnicity, race, class, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation and/or additional identities and backgrounds. In addition, we recognize that group therapists are working with and impacting diverse populations holding diverse identities and experiences, as well as those impacted by current and historic inequities.

Learning Objectives:.

  1. The capacity to assist group members as they negotiate outside events which are reflected in the group culture and dynamics.
  2. Ease with knowing how to use the authority of the role of group leader.
  3. Working with “online resistance” in ourselves and in group members, including dealing with changes to the therapeutic container.
  4. How to parse subjective and objective counter-transference in our current world.
  5. The ability to work with the healthy use of anger and to distinguish this from angry, destructive micro-aggressions

6 CE credits available for attendance. (Payable at time of Registration)

In order to qualify for CE credit you must attend the entire conference. Those who arrive more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is complete will not receive CE credits.
