Description

NCGPS Annual Fall Event 2019

“Group as Cultural Mother"

Presenter: Paul LePhuoc, PhD., CGP

Course Description:

Many models of cultural competence for work with multicultural populations lack a depth perspective that integrates psychoanalytic theory. This workshop will present the theory of the cultural mother as a deeper way of understanding ‘difference-as-hierarchy’ (sex, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical disability/disfigurement) in group therapy, and its manifestations in phenomena such as transference and countertransference. Techniques will be presented that provide the group leader with effective tools to engage with potential misattunements that often emerge around differences in social identities.

Paul LePhuoc, PhD., CGP

Paul LePhuoc is a licensed psychologist and a Certified Group Psychotherapist in Houston, TX., where he maintains a full-time private practice and leads two long-term ongoing analytic therapy groups. He is also Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. He is a former board member of the Houston Group Psychotherapy Society and the International Board for the Certification of Group Psychotherapists. He has led training groups in St. Petersburg, Russia through the Center for Group Studies. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and has trained at the Menninger Clinic, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, and Columbia University Medical Center.
