Description

North Carolina UAS Research Community!

The N.C. Department of Transportation Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program Office has contracted the Institute for Transportation Research and Education at North Carolina State University to facilitate this effort with the goal is to create a North Carolina UAS Research Hub that is an interactive knowledge base of past projects (since 2013), current capabilities, ongoing research and contact information for UAS related resources in the state. This knowledge base will be a dynamic repository used by the research community, government agencies, and industry for identifying the wide range of UAS researchcapabilities across the state.

The UAS Research Hub structure is currently under design. NCDOT and ITRE are launching an initial data capture phase to evaluate the knowledge base requirements and interface options. We are hosting the UAS Research Workshop on February 28, 2018 at the RTP Conference Center to discuss the UAS Research Hub objectives, connect the UAS research community, and review upcoming research opportunities.

The Research Hub is intended to capture ALL research related to Unmanned Aircraft Systems. This research may include the following:

  • UAS engineering: system design and development, noise reduction, endurance, aircraft collision, safety systems
  • UAS communications and control: swarms, data links, cybersecurity, satellite communications, autonomy
  • National Airspace System (NAS) integration: UAS Traffic Management (UTM), Detect-and-Avoid (DAA)/Sense-and-Avoid (SAA) technologies, Air Traffic Control interfacing
  • Sensors and payloads: Camera technology, environmental sensors, weapons
  • Human Factors: Control station design, intelligent information management, human-machine interaction
  • Social Impacts: UAS perception
  • Applications: package delivery, agriculture, surveying, personnel transport, remote sensing, etc
  • Economics: business cases for UAS applications, impacts of broader integration
  • Policies and regulations: UAS law, UAS standards and best practices, court cases

Researchers from universities, colleges, not-for-profit organizations are encouraged to attend. This workshop is for researchers only, no industry developers or service providers. Each researcher will have approximately 5 minutes with a 1-slide limit to discuss his/her UAS research history, current activities, capabilities, and interests. The slide template is available here: https://goo.gl/zmiyYG

A web-form for capturing initial content for the Research Hub knowledge base is here: https://goo.gl/YxDTq8 .

This form is capturing the following information:

| Point of Contact | Organization | Contact Information | Affiliated Research Groups |

| Research Topic | Research Sponsor | Project Value ($) | Period of Performance |

| Industry partners | Link to Report | Related Research Area |

After each researcher has presented their highlights, NCDOT will provide an update on their UAS integration efforts and future research interests.

Agenda Overview:

  • 10:00 - Welcome
  • Expectations for the day
  • Research briefings
  • 12:00 - Break for lunch (provided)
  • Research briefings
  • NCDOT UAS Program Update
  • Open Discussion
  • 4:00 - Adjourn

Workshop Logistics:

  • Time: 10:00 – 4:00
  • Location: Research Triangle Park Conference Center
  • 12 Davis Drive, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709
  • Meeting Room B
  • Parking: free at the Conference Center

We look forward to seeing you on February 28. This meeting will NOT be supported with call-in information. However, if you are unable to attend, but want to submit a one-slide summary to be included in the notes from the workshop, please send the slide to kyle_snyder@ncsu.edu.

Thank you for your contributions to the UAS community in North Carolina and nationally. We have some powerful research going on here in the state by researchers like yourself. This is the first step in pulling together these resources and uniting the North Carolina research community to maintain our position as a leader in UAS integration and development nationally. If there is somebody else that may be interested in attending, please forward this invitation or let us know where we need to send it.
