Summary & Overview

Join Tele Mike (NBS Backcountry & Uphill Skiing Coordinator) in conjuction with Backcountry Magazine's Base Camp, and several more Backcountry brands for immersive clinics and classes designed for NBS members who want to learn and experience the basics of backcountry & uphill skiing during the 2023 NBS Vail Summit. Backcountry Magazine and Tele Mike are committed to educating the NBS community on how to safely travel through untracked terrain.

Each day the NBS Basecamp will be filled with instruction, skill development and on-snow experience. Most events are $Free.99 for registered NBS members and $20 for non-registered participants.

Tele Mike and Basecamp have teamed up with several top Backcountry & Uphill brands including: 22Designs, Bishop, SCARPA, Osprey, Maeve40Fitness, Mountain Hardware, Full Circle Expeditions, Colorado Avalanche Information Center, US Forest Service, Atomic, Scott, Weston Snowboards, and more; many who will provide free backcountry equipment demos and teach the Backcountry & Uphill Skiing Clinics.

NBS Backcountry & Uphill Ski Basecamp Free Product Demo

Tele Mike and Backcountry Magazine's Basecamp have teamed up with several top Backcountry & Uphill Ski brands who will provide free backcountry gear (skis, boots, skins, bindings, backpacks, etc) for you to demo and take out to try including: Scott, Atomic, 22Designs, Bishop, SCARPA, Osprey, and more! Take gear out for a few lift access runs, or give uphill skiing a try on the short designated uphill lane that will be setup right next to the Basecamp Tents.

Introduction to Uphill Skiing

SCARPA sponsored professional athlete and competitive Ski Mountaineer & Uphill Ski Racer, Teague Holmes, will teach a basic awareness and understanding clinic on Uphill Skiing.

Participants will learn: (1) What is Uphill Skiing (2) What equipment and clothing are needed, including hands-on demonstrations (3) How to get started in Uphill Skiing

Location: Base Camp Tent at the bottom of Golden Peak Race Arena

Schedule: Tuesday, February 07, 2023 8:30AM - 10:00AM MST

What To Bring: If you want to try uphill skiing (skinning)then come prepared to hike a very short distance, less than 300 vertical feet. All uphill equipment will be provided.

Avalanche Awareness Clinic

Full Circle Everest expedition leader and professional outdoor educator (NOLS) Phil Henderson along with Dylan from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center will be teaching an Avalanche Awareness course. Day 1 is a $Free.99 course and will include a short 1.5 hour classroom discussion to drop us that knowledge on how to stay safe in and around steep slopes and avalanche terrain. Phil Henerson will also talk about his expedition to Everest and how he led the first all-African American team up Everest. Everyone is encouraged to participate.

Participants will learn:

  • The why, when and where avalanches happen so you can stay safe while riding
  • How to follow the AIARE Framework (American Institute for Avalanche Research & Education) to successfully navigate and ski/ride the backcountry
  • How to identify avalanche terrain
  • Details of the Full Circle African American Expedition on Everest

Location: Classroom location at Vail Snowsports Museum

What To Bring: Nothing is needed for the classroom session. Mask are optional.

Note: The Day 2 Vail Pass Backcountry Day has been canceled. All Avalanche Awareness Training is within Vail Resorts.

NBS Women Present: The Female Uphill Athlete Experience

The Womxn of the NBS are descending upon Vail Mountain for a Day of Uphill education, training, camaraderie and spa time.

Explore Uphill access with triple threat, Mackenzie "MK" Phillips, Tammy "Tam" VuPham, and Shane "Tele Shane" Coverdale for a confidence-inspiring date of education, training and Black girl magic time exploring the skills needed to pursue uphill and backcountry adventures.

The purpose of "The Female Uphill Athlete Experience" is to support Black womxn and other womxn of color in preparing their minds and bodies to navigate a non-traditional NBS Summit Experience.

Each participant will have access to all of the nature-infused treatments and recovery amenities available at The Dryland Spa facilities at Gravity Haus Vail including, steam room, sauna, salt room, cold plunge, compression boots, massage guns, etc. for the entire day.

How to Register: You MUST go to the Female Uphill Athlete Experience Eventbrite to register for this event.

Uphill Challenge

You will be provided with the experience to participate in the Uphill Ski Racing which is part of the NBS Club Ski Races. Base Camp, SCARPA, 22Designs, Bishop, and other vendors will provide free demo skis, bindings, boots, and skins to participate in this event. If you can walk 1/2 a mile then this fun challenge is for you! The Uphill Challenge will be timed. Top individual finishers will receive outwear gear from Mountain Hardware. In addition, race points will be awarded to your Ski Club for your participation.

Skiers x Snowboarders: Both Skiers and Snowboarders can participate. We will have both AT Skies and Splitboard Snowboards available to participate this year!!

Participants will learn how to:

1. Get in and out of Splitboard, AT Ski, or Telemark Backcountry boots, skis, and skins.

2. Apply and remove climbing skins for walking uphill.

3. Walk (skin) uphill.

4. Transition from climbing skin mode to ski mode and back.


Wednesday, February 08, 2023, Come anytime between 8:30AM - 3:00PM MST

Location: Base Camp Tent at the bottom of Golden Peak Race Arena

What to Bring: A small bottle of water. Otherwise, you will ski or walk to the Base Camp Tent at the bottom of Golden Peak Race Arena. There you will be provided with all of the Uphill ski equipment as well as instructions and plenty of assistance on how to ski up the hill, transition, and ski down the hill. The course will be the approximate distance of the beginner NASTAR race course.

Telemark Ski Clinic by 22Designs & Bishop

Have you ever wanted to try Telemark Skiing? Tele Mike & Tele Shane will be teaching a Telemark Ski Clinic. Free demo telemark boots, bindings, and skis will be provided. “Free the heel! Free the mind!”

Participants will learn the following:

1. How to get in and out of Telemark gear.

2. How to make Tele-pine turns

3. How to make Telemark turns

Telemark Ski Races by 22Designs & Bishop

Everyone knows that the best snow sliders on the mountain are the Telemark Skiers! Because if Telemark Skiing was that easy, it would be called Snowboarding, LOL! Just kidding snowboarders! Telemarkers got jokes! So let's show everyone that the Telemark Skiers can ski just as fast as the Alpine Skiers and Snowboarders, except we ski on our toes because we are built different! Top finishers will receive prizes and add race points to their NBS Club. Free demo Telemark Boots, Bindings, and Skis will be provided for free by 22Designs, Bishop, and Freeheel Life.
