This training will provide an overview of the screening process mandated by Mississippi Code .

About this Event

The Mississippi State Department of Health, Bureaus of Genetic Services and Early Intervention will sponsor a free Newborn Screening Quality Assurance and Improvement Training for hospital nursery, laboratory, and midwives who collect newborn bloodspot specimens and point of service screenings. Specimen collection, handling and shipping procedures, hearing screenings, and reporting procedures are among some of the topics that will be discussed.

This training will provide an overview of the standard procedures for screenings mandated by Mississippi Code §§ 41-21-201; 41-21-203; 41-90-1; 41-90-5. Hospital nursery, laboratory staff, and midwives will be equipped with information and resources to assist in improving newborn bloodspot, CCHD, and hearing screening and reporting, including specimen collection procedures.

At the conclusion of the training participants will:

1. Understand the importance of timely screening/ specimen collection and reporting in relation to state and federal benchmarks.

2. Be able to differentiate between acceptable and unacceptable specimen collection and reasons for unacceptability of the Dried Bloodspot card.

3. Understand the UPS specimen shipping process and ICVS system.

4. Distinguish between well-baby and NICU CCHD Screening protocols and reporting using the CCHD Status reporting portal.

5. Understand hearing screening and reporting procedures for all births using the Hospital Hearing Logs and newborns needing follow-up using Hearing Screening Reports.

6. Review and understand hospital performance in comparison to other state birthing facilities.
