Navigating the White research space: The role of senior leaders in supporting and retaining Black and minority ethnic researchers
About this event
The Social Researchers of Colour network (SROC) would like to invite you to our next event ‘‘Navigating the White research space: The role of senior leaders in supporting and retaining Black and minority ethnic researchers’.
SROC is a professional, volunteer led network which aims to improve the experiences of Social Researchers of Colour in the sector. In February 2020 two researchers Bethany Thompson and Shivonne Gates co-facilitated a workshop for early career researchers called ‘navigating the White Research space: Experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic researchers’ before founding the SROC network. As a follow up the SROC Committee would like to host a follow-on panel discussion and workshop that builds on the first workshop as well as some of the findings from the SRA/Young Foundation research.
Date and time: June 29th, 10-12.30 pm.
Format:
Panel discussion and Q&A covering topics including recruitment, retention and progression (45 minutes)
Workshop discussions in breakout rooms (45 minutes)
Regrouping and sharing ideas (15 minutes)

Who can attend?
This workshop will be aimed at senior leaders/those in positions of power who are able to affect real change regarding their organisational makeup (e.g. through hiring and retention policies).
Aims and objectives:
The overall objective of the panel discussion and workshop will be to provide senior leaders with the opportunity to:
- improve their understanding of best practice
- think, reflect, and develop actions that they themselves can implement to affect change
The panel discussion will focus on examples of best practice initiatives and reflections on opportunities for progress. We would like to provide senior leaders with the opportunity to ask questions and consider solutions in a supportive environment.
