Navigating the Waters 2018 will be held on November 8th, 2018 at St Andrew's Church in Eden Prairie.

9:00am: Conflict Resolution and Mediation Overview

Dawn Zugay, Conflict Resolution Center

Conflict exists in all of our lives. It is a part of human existence. But, conflict in itself isn’t good or bad. The issue is how we deal with conflict. This session will explore the causes of conflict and some simple skills you can use to respond constructively to conflict and help prevent it from escalating. It will also discuss when to call an outside neutral mediator and how mediation can be helpful in resolving landlord-tenant conflicts.

11:00am: Decoding Communication Differences

How background, economics and culture shape how we function and why deciphering the difference between oral and print culture matters in our work and in designing helping progams and systems.

Dawn Zugay is the Housing Program Manager at the Conflict Resolution Center, an attorney, a Qualified Neutral under Minn. Rule 114 and an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota Law School’s Legal Clinic. Dawn is an experienced mediator and conflict coach and mediates regularly in Hennepin County Housing and Harassment Court. She also mediates landlord-tenant, community, employment, and family disputes. Dawn is currently leading CRC’s Pre-eviction Mediation Program designed to decrease evictions by promoting early mediation between landlords and tenants. Dawn believes that mediation provides people in conflict with the opportunity to solve their problems in a respectful and lasting way

Maricela Muñoz worked for Ramsey County Human Services for 12 years as a Family Case Manager, Community Outreach Worker and Intake Worker. As a county financial worker, she determined and established eligibility for cash, food support, health care and emergency assistance programs. She is currently employed with the State of Minnesota as an Income Maintenance Program Advisor in the SNAP Department. She has been with DHS for almost 4 years. In her current position, one of her functions is to help clients, callers and third parties connect with resources such as: cash and food support primarily.

Patricia Fenrick has worked with diverse communities for over 17 years. Most of her career has focused on refugee and immigrant populations. She was the Executive Director for the refugee resettlement agency, World Relief Minnesota, worked in community development with immigrants for the City of Eden Prairie and oversaw the Human Rights and Diversity Commission. Patricia has been an adjunct professor for several local universities and teaches about social justice issues. She currently works for the Department of Human Services Refugee Programs Office in education, outreach and refugee workforce development.
