Description

This presentation will help attendees learn to better navigate the complexities often encountered when working with domestic violence. The presenter will define what domestic violence is, discuss who is impacted by domestic violence, explore the importance of universal screening, and cover important questions to ask all clients. She will also identify the dynamics of power and control in an abusive relationship and what can be expected when a client is in a state of crisis. The importance of safety planning and providing clients with tools and referrals will also be addressed.

This free event is sponsored by Maine Township's MaineStay Youth & Family Services and Chicago Behavioral Hospital. It is appropriate for social service professionals and includes 2.0 free CEUs for social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and nurses. Continental breakfast will be available from 8:30-9:00 AM. Advance registration is requested as seating for this event is limited.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Maine Township Food Pantry.


About the Presenter

April Flores Brayton
April Flores Brayton, MBA, ICDVP is currently the Manager of Community Based Services for WINGS Program, Inc. Her experience includes over 12 years of direct management of victim response and prevention programs, victim services and administration of awareness and prevention training to victims, employees and volunteers.
April is a bi-lingual, bi-cultural Latina leader with direct service experience. She is an Illinois Domestic Violence Professional dedicated to helping women, men and children escape domestic violence and access culturally linguistically sensitive services. April is a member of the Northwest Suburban Alliance Against Domestic Violence, Latina Providers for the NW Suburbs, MRC (medical response coalition), and serves on the Advisory Board for the Learning and Career Center at Harper College. She previously worked as a Legal Advocate for domestic violence victims out of the Rolling Meadows Court House.
